A new method of accurately measuring the midline retrogastric and retroduodenal spaces is presented. Reproducibility of the retrogastric (antrum-to-spine) measurement was established in 20 volunteers. Good correlation exists between the true retrogastric thickness and patient weight, but none between the true retroduodenal distance and patient weight. The 95% confidence limits of both the retrogastric and retroduodenal measurements allow good separation of normal and abnormal values.
