Polymerization of 1-chloro-l-octyne (ClG^ C-rc-CgH13) catalyzed by a mixture of MoC16, n-Bu4Sn, and EtOH (molar ratio 1: 1: 0.5) produced a polymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD; Me/Mn= 1.1-1.3). The number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer increased in direct proportion to conversion and further increased on addition of a new monomer feed to the polymerization system. The ratio of the propagating species to the Mo catalyst was rather small (0.017). Other 1-chloro-l-alkynes (C1C= CR; R= n-C4H9, 72-C8H17, and ra-C^ H^) formed polymers with similarly narrow MWDs. Thus, the present polymerization indicates the presence of a long-lived propagating species and, though yet imperfect, is the first clear example of living polymerization of acetylenic monomers.
