ResultsCampylobacter isolates were recovered from 3.6^ 0 of ho-mosexual or bisexual men, from 19.7^ 0 of diarrhea or proc-titis episodes in symptomatic men, and from 8.7^ 0 of patients with AIDS who did or did not have diarrhea (table 1). One asymptomatic subject was simultaneously colonized with two different species of Campylobacter, ie, C. jejuni and C. cinaedi. We recovered 11 isolates of Campylobacter from 10 men in the volunteer group (ta-ble 1). Nine volunteers reported diarrhea or anorectal pain, discharge, or discomfort at the time of study, and two of these men were infected with C jejuni or C. cinaedi. Exclusion of these nine men (3.6^ 0 of 252) reporting diarrhea or anorectal symptoms left a total of eight Campylobacter isolates from seven of the 243 asymptomatic men, a number representing a yield of 2.9* 70 for asymptomatic carriage. There were 12 strains of Campylobacter recovered from 12 (19.7^ 0) of 61 episodes of either diarrhea or proctitis in 59 homosexual or bisexual men (table 1). Campylobac-ter organisms were recovered from eight of 31 cases of di-arrhea, and six of the eight cases had no other recognized agent of diarrhea recovered [7], The isolation of C. sputo-rum and CLO group 3 (C1jO-3) occurred concurrently with shigellosis in the remaining two cases. A recognized agent of proctitis (herpes simplex virus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, or Chlamydia trachomatis) was identified concurrently with Campylobacter spp. in four patients presenting with symptoms of proctitis. The C fetus subspecies fetus recovered from one patient was an atypical, temperature-tolerant strain.
