Department of Physics, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada P7B 5E1~Received 13 August 1998!A photon position operator with commuting components is constructed, and it is proved that it equals thePryce operator plus a term that compensates for the adiabatic phase. Its eigenkets are transverse and longitu-dinal vectors, and thus states can be selected that have definite polarization or helicity. For angular momentumand boost operators defined in the usual way, all of the commutation relations of the Poincare´group aresatisfied.
