This chapter provides an overview of the verbal system as a whole, then lists some ways in which grammaticalization phenomena are illustrated in the corpus, and finally discusses briefly some implications for the prominence it gives to tense and aspect. It summarizes the attested functions and the verbal forms that express them. At the synchronic stage of the language attested in the Aramaic of Daniel, the verbal system contains grammatical constructions that express at least the following functions: anterior/resultative, simple past, general imperfective, past imperfective, future, and modality. This book began with a very brief introduction to some cross linguistic trends related to grammaticalization. Therefore, it is appropriate to return to these phenomena, and mention how they can be illustrated by examples from the verbal system of the Aramaic of Daniel.Keywords: Aramaic of Daniel; grammaticalization; verbal system
