improvements could be made, for example, Chapter 7 could have been more concise and more explicit about the role of the MT use in the FL role-taking and role-making activities; the claim at the end of Chapter 8 that the communicative approach and task-based instruction need overhauling may need a little more elaboration; and in Chapter 13, there could be a more systematic and coherent way to arrange the ‘practical suggestions’ (230 235). The first two suggestions seem to overlap while the third and fourth suggestions seem to be unrelated topics. In summary, this is a thought-provoking book on the bilingual reform in FLT. It is of great significance to ELT in EFL context (e.g., China) and multilingual societies (e.g., Hong Kong). The paradigm shift, if well implemented, can lead to positive changes and increased effectiveness in FLT methodologies and the entire ELT powerhouse or industry. As the authors rightly put it: ‘this book is intended to enrich existing methodologies, and not to impoverish them’ (88).
