The jaw opening reflex was elicited in lightly anesthetized rabbits prior to and during mastication induced by oral stimulation. The mean amplitude of the digastric electromyographic reflex responses occurring during chewing were lower than control responses recorded prior to movement. In addition to this general reduction in reflex sensitivity during mastication, the amplitude was found to be phasically modulated. The largest responses occurred during jaw closing, when the oral soft tissues and periodontal ligament are most likely to be damaged by the heavy forces generated in the jaw closing muscles. It is likely that the increase in the reflex response during closure, when the digastric muscle is normally inactive, is not controlled by motoneuron excitability, but by premotoneuron mechanisms.
