S. dublin, in doses ranging from 106-109 organisms, was given i.v. to 30 young adult cattle, 18 of which were infected 13 wk previously with 1000 metacercariae of F. hepatica. In fluke-free cattle 109 S. dublin proved lethal, while lower doses caused only transient pyrexia. In fluke-infected cattle 5 .times. 107 S. dublin was lethal in 3 out of 4 cases and survivors of this and lower doses excreted larger numbers of S. dublin in faeces more frequently and for a longer period than did fluke-free animals. Necropsy 26 wk after infection with S. dublin revealed the tissues and body fluids of the fluke-free groups to be unifected or only lightly infected, whereas those of the fluke-infected groups given 106 or 5 .times. 107 organisms were still heavily infected with S. dublin. Fascioliasis increased the susceptibility of cattle to the lethal effects of S. dublin and predisposed to development of the carrier state.
