The prevalence of obesity in the United States remains dangerously high, at nearly 10% among infants and toddlers, 17% of children and teens, and more than 30% of adults1, 2. While the prevalence has stabilized somewhat over the past few years1, rates of severe obesity have continued to climb, particularly in high-risk populations3. Intervening during childhood is important due to the persistence of obesity into adulthood with associated increased morbidity and mortality4–7.
