METHODThe patients in this study were Caucasians with dark-colored tattoos and were volunteers for the experiment. Q-switched(lo-to 20-nanosecond pulse duration) ruby (6943 Angstroms) laser was applied with energy density varying from 2 to 7.3 joules per square centimeter. The beam was focused by a long focal length lens. The subject was positioned at varying distances from the lens, providing variation of the energy density. The therapy was done without premeditation or any type of anesthesia. The patients wore laser sunglasses. The laser energy density was changed in small increments in order to determine the critical or optimal dosage level. Four patients were treated and followed for 2 to 4 months. Serial biopsies were taken, preserved in formalin, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
