A long with the many new impression materials, new methods of tissue retraction for fixed prosthetic impressions were developed. Cord tissue retraction was used, le3 but chemical absorption into the general circulation was a problem. Electrosurgical tissue retraction’+ produced the sulcus, but it still required cord retraction. The development of many types of acrylic resins* has made the use of chemically impregnated cords unnecessary. Cordless tissue retraction, which is applicable only to polysulfide and silicone rubber base impression materials, may be divided into four procedures:(1) Relining a preliminary impression,(2) beading a coldcuring acrylic resin tray,(3) correcting an unacceptable final impression, and (4) making an impression in an aluminum shell. Relining a preliminary impression. A spacer of wet asbestos is placed on a diagnostic cast which has the missing teeth waxed in. This spacer is placed over the teeth to be prepared and any “waxed-in” edentulous regions to be restored. An acrylic resin tray is made.A preliminary impression is made of the complete preparation with heavy body rubber base impression material. The abutment teeth are partially dried before placing the tray into position to make the impression. The preliminary impression is removed (Fig. 1) and prepared to become the impression tray for the final impression. The surplus rubber is removed and the tray is trimmed. The rubber base material is trimmed with burs so that the impression of the margins will be the most superior part of the tray (Fig. 2). Magic marker lines are made on the external surface of the rubber base impression to serve as guide lines. All of the incisal and the occlusal portions of this preliminary impression are perforated to create escape vents for excess impression material. Regular body rubber base material is mixed and loaded into the preliminary impression. The filled impression tray is then placed into position as indicated by the magic marker guide lines. The vent holes of the abutment teeth are never
