Many organisms react to changes in illumination; they have developed sensory systems in which the absorption of light triggers changes in cellular processes driven by metabolic reactions, eg the changes of transmembrane currents in the photoreceptors of the eye. The cells expend energy in signal transduction. In contrast, during fight energy transducfion, the absorbed light energy is converted to other forms of energy which the cells use to drive metabolic processes uphill.
