The article studies the effects of exposure to copper and malathion on metallothionein levels and acetylcholinesterase activity of the mussel mytilus edulis and the clam macoma balthica from the Northern Baltic Sea. In the Baltic Sea, biomarkers have been applied to the monitoring of biological effects of pollution to a very limited extent. In the present study the effects of copper and the pesticide malathion and their combinations on two common biomarkers in these bivalve species were studied using a short-term laboratory exposure.
