Guinea pigs could be regularly infected with a drug resistant strain of Vibrio cholerae after their normal enteric flora had been inhibited with streptomycin. The experimental infection was fatal and limited to the bowel. Accumulation of fluids with high mucinase activity occurred in the intestines of infected animals. Immunization with boiled vibrios or with culture filtrates containing mucinase protected guinea pigs against the experimental infection. Large doses of endotoxin in the form of heat killed vibrios or of water soluble toxin preparations did not affect guinea pigs when given orally.
