Conceptual models of family building and their implications for effects at different levels of aggregation are described. Strategies and illustrative hypotheses are offered for the selection of dependent variables which are most likely to show contextual variation appropriate independent variables the mechanisms by which they may have an effect and the optimal level of aggregation. Basic statistical methods are reviewed with reference to possible biases in favor of either individual or aggregate levels of explanation. This research is part of a large project on multi-level influences on fertility and contraception in the US using Cycle III of the National Survey on Family Growth and other sources. (authors)
