Local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) has been measured in 44 patients with cerebro-vascular pathology. Recordings have been made by the hydrogen clearance method. It has been established that tests involving mental activity cause regularly occuring changes in LCBF. In the absence of a general vegetative reaction, different types of psychological activity elicit statistically significant but varying changes in LCBF. With the appearance of a general vegetative reaction during the test, LCBF reaction to tests is suppressed. At any one point in the brain LCBF value may be caused by different functional tests. Different functional tests elicit at any one point differing changes in LCBF. Regularly occuring changes in LCBF values during functional tests are recorded not only in the zones representing these functions in the left hemisphere, but also at a considerable distance from these zones in the dominant left hemisphere, and even in the right hemisphere. Following endovascular operations regularly occuring changes in LCBF values in response to functional tests are disturbed in the zone of vascularization of the occluded vessels.
