Nerve fiber swelling during the action potential was demonstrated by 3 different methods. Generation of propagated nerve impulse in the claw of a crab [Callinectes sapidus] produced an outward movement of 50-100 .ANG. of the nerve surface and a rise in swelling pressure of 5 dyn/cm2. In giant squid axons, the amplitude of the observed outward movement of the surace was small.
