Six patients treated recently at The Johns Hopkins Hospital illustrate diverse ways in which primary or secondary esophageal neoplasms can masquerade as other conditions, such as lower esophageal spasm, tracheoesophageal fistula, suspected aortic aneurysm, and stricture above a hiatal hernia. The first reported patient with plasmacytoma of the esophagus is presented. The diverse preoperative findings in these patients demonstrate varied and unusual guises of esophageal malignancies and stress the importance of thorough evaluation, tissue diagnosis, and operative exploration if necessary in patients with esophageal disorders. The value of palliative operative intervention for complications of secondary esophageal malignancies is emphasized.
