2. ObjectivesA millimeter wave system required for ITER is larger than ever before, namely, 24 MW radio frequency (RF) power at 170 GHz in CW operation and additional 24 MW as a possible upgrade option. The torus windows as a barrier for tritium and other radioactive material must satisfy the safety requirement to bear pressure of 0.2 MPa in case of a coolant leak into the vacuum vessel. This overall system performance inevitably needs much higher performance of RF components in comparison with existing ones. Among them, the most critical ones are the RF generators, namely the gyrotrons, and the corresponding windows because of high heat load to the cavity, collector and window.
