The ability of certain strains of Escherichia coli to lyse erythrocytes of different mammalian species (hemolysis) was first described by Kayser in 1903. The hemolytic activity was detected in the culture fluid of E. coli which were isolated from human abcesses and from fecal material. First reports on the association of hemolysin production with urinary tract infection (UTI) in humans by E. coli were published in the early twenties (Dudgeon et al. 1921; Dudgeon et al. 1922). Since that time the hemolysins of E. coli have been investigated mainly for two aspects: their biological and biochemical properties and their significance as virulence factors in E. coli infections of humans and animals. The purpose of this work is to present an overview on the different hemolysins described in E. coli and the state of knowledge on their properties and their role in pathogenicity.
