Up to the present time there has heen no direct method of measuring changes in collagen in living tissues. In fact, the only observation that can be made is the measurement of the urinary excretion of hydroxyproline as a parameter of collagen metabolism. Since one of the most characteristic features of collagen is its very great tensile strength, it is logical to look for a change in its mechanical properties as a possible index of change in its structure both in health and disease. We have chosen for this purpose to investigate the elastic properties of a readily accessible organ very rich in collagen, namely the skin. In this communication we will describe a new method of measuring human skin elasticity in vivodeveloped by one of us (RG) and present the results obtained in healthy subjects in an attempt to elucidate the process of ageing as it affects the dermal collagen.
