Free relative clauses or simply free relatives (FRs) are descriptively defined as wh-clauses which, despite their clausal nature, function as nominal, prepositional, adverbial, or adjectival phrases in their host clauses (Bresnan & Grimshaw 1978; Caponigro 2003; ao).
