Since the genitalia serve only one function and are located internally, they are probably less affected than most other morphological features by environmental conditions and less subject to adaptive changes during the phylogenetic history. A comparative study of them may therefore help to trace the interrelations of the groups more clearly than the external characters, on which the current classification is based.
