Five × 103units of murine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), administered every other day until control (uninfected) mice began to die, completely protected mice against death from toxoplasmosis, whereas 50% of untreated infected mice died. In a 2nd experiment, a significantly prolonged survival was observed in mice that received injections of 5 × 103, 5 × 102or 5 × 10 units of IFN-γ. Two injections only of either 5 × 103or 5 × 104units of IFN-γ also resulted in prolonged survival. Treated protected mice, but not treated unprotected mice had significantly higher dye test titres toToxoplasma gondiithan did untreated infected mice. A further experiment demonstrated that the effect of IFN-γ may also be mediated through its ability to activate macrophages.
