Morphometric information, as obtained by application of stereologic methods in light and electromicroscopy of tissue sections, allows a quantitative definition of organ models. These serve attempts to correlate structure and function quantitatively and provide insight into internal functional processes. The possibilities for applying morphometric information are illustrated by means of a simplified model for the pulmonary gas exchange apparatus.
