In light of historical documents, the writer explores the changes in the geographic northern bounds of China’s orange cultivation. In the late Northern and Southern Dynasties and the late Ming Dynasty, orange cultivation exceeded its present northern geographical bounds, while in some other periods, such bounds displayed obvious recession to the south. All this is chiefly related to climatic changes.Comparatively detailed records in the early Qing Dynasty indicate that the tendency to become cold in the climate characterized by successive cold spells played a decisive part in setting the northern bounds of China’s orange cultivation.
