B lymphocytes play critical protective roles in maintaining health, including defense against infection and generating an effective response to vaccines. Increasingly, B cells are recognized to actively interact with T lymphocytes to contribute to antibody-independent protective and pathogenic function; B cells are no longer viewed simply as “antibody factories.” Defects in B cell development can be associated with clinical immunodeficiency, whereas a hyperactive B cell compartment may contribute to the development of autoimmune disease, malignant diseases, and transplant rejection. 1–7
