The lattice dynamics of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric La 2 NiO 4 has been investigated by inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on single crystals. The phonon dispersion curves of stoichiometric La 2 NiO 4 are found to closely resemble those of stoichiometric La 2 CuO 4. Doping by extra oxygen or cation deficiency leads to phonon anomalies similar to those observed in doped (L a, S r) 2 CuO 4.
