Consideration of the influence of catalysts on the hydrogenation of bituminous coal and asphalt has led to the formulation of a descriptive theory of coal hydrogenation. It is postulated that coal (or asphalt) is thermally split to form reactive fragments, the splitting being catalyzed by-halogen acids. The fragments either polymerize to form benzene insoluble products or are stabilized by the addition of hydrogen to form soluble products. The hydrogenation stabilization is catalyzed by tin.
