The hemolytic role of aspirin was examined in healthy patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase [G-6-PD] deficiency, and the in vitro effects of salicylate and its 1 oxidant metabolite, gentisic acid, were measured in normal and G-6-PD-deficient red blood cells. It was previously suggested that the hemolytic properties of aspirin were caused by gentisic acid, but the concentration needed to cause hemolysis is above normal therapeutic conditions. Aspirin related hemolysis may be caused by associated clinical problems, i.e., infection, rather than drug administration. Aspirin can probably be safely used for conditions where it is clinically indicated in patients with G-6-PD deficiency.
