A dynamometer is described by means of which the strength of chimpanzees, chiefly a male and female, was measured and compared with that of college athletes. The 2-hand pull of the female was 2.51-4.73 times as great as that of the athletes when compared according to weight. The 1-hand pull of the male was 3.85-4.78 times as great. The 2-hand pull of the female was 1260 pounds; the 1-hand pull of the male was 847 pounds. It is concluded in the discussion that man ranks in strength above the Ungulata, the beetle and the ant but probably below the Carnivora and the Primates. Evidence in the case of the chimpanzee indicates that the relative development of the various muscle attachment ridges and pits in the bones is not a trustworthy indication of the strength of the individual and that, therefore, inferences so made concerning the strength of the Neanderthal man may not be fully reliable. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: J.
