[Also in Division F2] In a fluid thrust bearing of an extruder, fluid is supplied to a gap between an end of a thrust screw 42 and end member 56 by rotation of screw 42 in the bore 41 of barrel 40. The fluid returns to the other end of the bore 41 through passage 60. A roller bearing 58 takes the thrust at low speeds of the screw 42. In Fig. 2 an extruder has a pair of extruder screws in a barrel 17 each feeding plastics material to a die 20. Each extruder screw is connected with a respective thrust screw in barrel 40, the connected screws being coaxial but having threads of the opposite hand. The axial thrust on the extruder screws during operation is balanced by that on the thrust screws produced at the bearing. The temperature of the bearing fluid is controlled by a heating or cooling fluid flowing through a jacket around barrel 40. The bearing fluid temperature may be controlled by the speed of the extruder screws.
