The process of spinning fibres in viscous liquids has been discussed and the conditions for continuous fibre formation have been formulated. The formation of fibres without a break of the liquid stream may be accomplished when either a decrease of tensile force, or an increase ofTroutonviscosity along the spinning way takes place. The first event may be observed in some special conditions, e. g. by “gravitational spinning” i. e. the flow of a liquid stream drawn by the force of its own weight. The technical spinning is based rather on the second condition-the strong increase of viscosity and an appearance of a yield stress. The stream diameter distributions along the spinning way have been determined for polycapronamide, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene melt-spun fibres. The velocity-spinning way and velocity gradient-spinning way relations have been calculated. The effect of spinneret orifice diameter, take-up velocity, flow intensity and melt temperature on the shape of diameter-spinning way curves has been investigated. The analogy between the results obtained on various polymer melts and those described byKastandElsaesserfor cellulose solutions suggests that the fibre formation has a common mechanism regardless of the spinning procedure and the molecular structure of the polymer.
