The long evolution of mammalian viviparity has resulted in such a close integration between mother and fetus that the fetus can in many ways be regarded as an extra organ temporarily acquired by the mother. The analogy should not be pressed too far. Unlike most organs, the fetus receives most of the benefits of the association and pays very little, at least in physiological currency, for its keep. Nevertheless, in removing the fetus from the maternal environment and attempting to maintain it in vitro, we immediately encounter many of the problems of culturing explanted organs, and should first consider how far organ culture methods are applicable. The methods and results of different types of organ and tissue culture have been fully described in several excellent books in recent years (e. g. Paul, 1970; Willmer, 1965), and no attempt will be made here even to summarize them. But a few points can be noted of particular relevance to the culture of fetuses during the period of organogenesis.
