After thermotropic liquid-crystalline side-chain polymers have been synthesized first I) in 1978, this field has been growing rapidly (compare, eg, refs.’9’) for reviews). The field of liquid-crystalline elastomers, which had been synthesized shortly thereafter 4, by crosslinking liquid-crystalline side-chain polymers, has been growing much more slowly5-*) and only re~ ently~~~~) the experimental investigation of the dynamic physical properties of liquid-crystalline elastomers has started. This situation can be expected to change in the near future, because the synthesis of liquid single crystal elastomers (LSCE’s), the analogue of single crystals in solid-state physics, has been reported 11, 12), thus making it possible to investigate well characterized macroscopic samples by various dynamic techniques including light scattering, ultrasound absorption, electromechanical effects, etc.
