We performed inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on solid and liquid Li to determine the static density response function, whereis wave vector. The experimentally determinedallows meaningful comparison of the response function with that of the electron gas model;exhibits thesingularity predicted in the electron gas model. The screening electron density induced by a positive point charge is calculated, and it shows Friedel oscillations both in solid and liquid Li. Moreover, we found that the Friedel oscillations become weak upon melting.
