The Loweswater case study was based around a water catchment in the UK. It was an action‐research experiment to test a bottom‐up approach to catchment management at the small catchment scale and explore fit with broader water governance arrangements. This chapter uses the Loweswater case study to explore how the adoption of an approach based on understanding the links between social and ecological systems at local scales may provide valuable insights into appropriate spatial scales for the management and/ or governance of the ecosystem service provision of clean water. The chapter describes the natural and social catchment of Loweswater and the governance arrangements surrounding it. It focuses on the mechanism which attempted to implement a community catchment management approach at Loweswater. The chapter concludes with some reflections from the project on how environmental governance is sensitive to social and natural scales and what can be learned from the Loweswater example.
