In a recent article, Peters et al.(1) investigated the associations of lifetime occupational exposure to extremely lowfrequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) and electric shocks with risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in population-based case-control studies from 3 European countries (2010–2015). Based on job-exposure matrix (JEM) assessment, the authors found that both ever exposure to ELF-MF (odds ratio= 1.16, 95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.33) and ever potential exposure to electric shocks above background level (odds ratio= 1.23, 95% confidence interval: 1.05, 1.43) were associated withALS risk (1). These findings are interesting and support possible independent associations of occupational exposure to ELFMF and electric shocks with ALS risk. Previously, we performed a meta-analysis of the association between ELF-MF exposure and ALS risk and found a slight but significant increase in ALS risk among studies that estimated exposure level by the job title of electrical occupations, but not those that estimated exposure by a JEM (2).
