It is, of course, well known that long bones, with the exception of the clavicle, are ossified in and around a cartilage mass which acts as a model for the bone and a mould for the bony tissue. It is also generally accepted without question that longitudinal growth of a long bone is dependent upon intact growth cartilages (Haas, 1917, 1945; Banks and Compere, 1941; Ring, 1955a and b). However, some workers report that long bones can grow in length after complete excision of the growth cartilages (Selye, 1934; Hellstadius, 1947). In this paper some observations are reported which suggest that traditional views about the role of the growth cartilages may require amplification.
