Abstract When International Journal of Urban and Regional Research was founded in the late 1970's it was with a sense of intellectual excitement, based on a common commitment amongst those who edited and contributed to the journal. The new currents of social theory and analysis that began flowing in the late 1960's and early 1970's were perceived to have paradigm-shifting implications in the field of urban and regional analysis. Not that there was much to push out of the way, since much previous work had been atheoretical and descriptive, often based on a technocratic or planning perspective. The structure-consciousness-action theoretical chain starts from the material and existential circumstances of people in specific contexts, moves through a common awareness of the exploitation or disadvantage inherent in such contexts and leads on to forms of social action, which would, finally, achieve the removal, amelioration or diversion of the offending social institution, oppressive social relations. The essence of this chain of social action is summed up by the mantra structure-consciousness-action.
