A drawback of the periodic inspection policy associated with the delay-time concept is that early inspections typically contribute little to reliability but increase inspection cost and downtime. In this paper, we consider a quasi-periodic inspection policy with two decision variables (the inspection interval and the time to the first inspection, an integer multiple of the inspection interval) that avoids unnecessary inspections and can be conveniently implemented. For the policy, three optimization problems with different combinations of objectives and constraint are examined, depending on whether safety criticality or economic factors dominate. The method to find the optimal solution is presented, and the effectiveness of the proposed inspection policy is illustrated by a numerical example. The main findings are: (a) the effect of the characteristics (e.g., magnitude and dispersion) of delay time depends on the optimisation criterion; (b) the optimal inspection interval is generally 0.5–1.0 times the mean delay time.
