PAUL ALAN COX and MICHAEL J. BALICK met in the late 1970s, when they were doctoral students at Harvard University. Cox is dean of general education and honors and professor of botany at Brigham Young University. He is also president of the Society for Economic Botany. Balick is Philecology Curator of Economic Botany and director of the Institute for Economic Botany of the New York Botanical Garden in Bronx, NY He is also past president of the Society for Economic Botany. Cox and Balick, who are collaborating on a book about ethnobotany for WH Freeman and Company, serve as advisers to a variety of governmental, academic and industrial research groups and foundations.
