The conditions for the appearance of current (neutral) sheets during slow movements of a plasma with a frozen-in strong magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that a necessary condition for the appearance of a current sheet in the two-dimensional case is the presence of a neutral line in the magnetic field. The structure of the field in the vicinity of the current sheet is investigated and a method is proposed for the determination of a field satisfying prescribed boundary conditions. It is shown that, in the general case, forward and backward currents exist in the sheet. Under special conditions, however, when the total current in the layer is matched in a specific manner to the external field, backward currents are absent and the structure of the field corresponds to that of the familiar selfsimilar solutions.
