For over a decade our research program has dealt with the effects of genetics and environmental parameters on the productivity and disease resistance of chickens. The results of this research indicate that rather mild genetic and environmental changes can alter the parameters that we measure in very complex ways. This should be helpful for evaluating their welfare under the various ways in which they are managed.
