Throughout the Middle Ages, kings and princes looked to foreign countries for spouses, either for themselves or for their sons. These international marriages led, quite naturally, to the migration of the spouses, including their entourages, to the country of their future husbands. Such an entourage would normally have constituted a rather small group, consisting of about five to twenty people; its influence, however, could still have been significant. The most important reason for kings to look abroad for a suitable wife was status, as a female person of kingly rank could naturally not be found in the king's own realm outside the king's own family.
