Research Background: In the Literary Studies and Creative Writing fields, setting is an acknowledged concern for creative writers. In knowing this, we usually think of the authorial creation of settings in fiction, drama and poetry. But also there is the setting for the writing - the actual place where the writer settles and sits. This paper investigates the site of the writing practice. Research Contribution: This paper contends that writers make significant choices about the places in which they write. It investigates several real-life settings where significant works in English literature were written. It focuses on writers Robert Graves, DH Lawrence, Lawrence Durrell and Byron and the Mediterranean island locations they chose to write in. While visiting these writing sites, I kept a journal of my own writings, extracts from which are reproduced (in italics) throughout this piece. Research Significance: The paper investigates an area on the borders between the Creative Writing and Literary Studies disciplines barely yet investigated. The paper is published in a Category A refereed journal.
