Traditional 1Dinversions have been widely used in the airborne EM data processing and interpretation. However, the inversion at a single survey station for the complex underground structure can sometimes be problematic. Some serious problems may occur, such as the inverted earth parameters at neighbor stations change sharply, the inverted layer interfaces have strong lateral discontinuities.Taking into account the fact that airborne EM systems have very high spatial sampling, while the underground structures under the neighbor stations should be continuous to some extent,we put forward in this paper the laterally-constrained inversion(LCI)and make further improvements by adding different weights to each inversion parameter. We first discuss the AEM forward modeling and WLCI algorithm, focusing on the theory and inversion techniques, followed by how to apply it for the frequency-domain AEM inversions. We check the effectiveness of the technique by implementing it to both synthetic and survey data and comparing the results with those from other conventional inversions.
