This handsane textbook is the third in the series in'Ccmputational Mechods in blechanics and Thermal Sciences', with Prof. WJ Minkowycz and Prof. EM Sparrow, as series editors. The book is aimed at presentiw various computational techniques and methodology of solution of relatively cmon physical problems of conduction, convection and radiation, but without the derivation of the governing equations and physical interpretation of the numerical results. In this book the author has tried to strike a good balance between the real need of heat transfer engineers and the innovative efforts of applied mathematicians. Since few real physical problems can be solved analytically, one is frequently forced to rely on numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions. The author deserves to be cunplimented for the monumental and streneous task of presenting such a vast and varied subject in a nice, coherent and readable manner. The book is written with the assumption of very little prior knowledge of the subject on the part of the reader. It consists of 15 chapters. These chapters are logically grouped into 4 parts. There are three appendixes, one of which embodies two canputer programs and results and a useful vell-organized index. The text layout is discussed by the author in the Preface of the book, where he provides a particularly useful indication of the topics covered in the various chapters. Part I contains 4 chapters which predcminantly describe and discuss the various finite element methods presently used in the heat transfer literature. Particular emphasis has been given to the Galerkin method, method of least squares
