Short-term heavy rain, a frequent event during the summer season in Liaoning Province, China, is a common environmental constraint for cherry production as it causes oxygen deprivation in plants. Mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb) has been used as a sweet cherry rootstock in cool regions because of its high propagation rate and adaptability. However, this species is vulnerable to waterlogging caused by short-term heavy rainfalls, especially during the rainy season. In the present study, we characterized the fundamental acclimation responses of mahaleb seedlings to re-oxygenation during the recovery after the period of anoxia. Re-oxygenation rapidly decreased the malondialdehyde content in mahaleb, and the enzymatic assays revealed that the levels of catalase and peroxidase during waterlogging and re-oxygenation decreased. We also characterized the differences in the response to re-oxygenation between root and leaf tissues. Our results confirm that different tissues show different response to re-oxygenation - roots recover faster from oxidative damage compared to leaves.
