Novice Virtusphere users often encounter difficulties when attempting to translate their intentions to virtual locomotion movements. In particular, when users intend to walk straight ahead, the interface often veers in a slightly different direction due to the mechanics of walking. In an attempt to improve this, the interface was modified to incorporate the direction of the user's torso as an indicator of intended movement direction. The new interface scheme was tested against the baseline Virtusphere interface, revealing similar movement performance during training, but increased self-reported naturalness, and more accurate traversal during a blind-walking paradigm, facilitating trajectory analysis.
